How much does a website cost?

How much should a website cost? Well, that isn’t a one answer question. Several factors determine website costs:

  • Design
  • Integration needs
  • Platform
  • Hosting & Domain
  • Developer Knowledge

Developer Cost

While the list that we give here isn’t inclusive, it should help you get an idea. The driving cost factor in website costs is the developers themselves. Many developers charge based on years of experience or the simple fact that you are asking for something you can’t do; therefore, you need them.

Keep in mind that many web designers/developers are self-proclaimed, and one thing you should ask for is what type of credentials do they have? While schooling isn’t everything in the web world, it does provide a solid foundation. The last thing you want is someone selling you things based on personal opinion or preference. It would be best if you went with a designer, developer, or company that can provide facts that support the reason why they do what they do.

Hosting & Domain Cost

Additional costs happen if an individual does not have their hosting or domain name already when wanting to build a website. While the costs are minimal, they are additional. We encourage our clients to see if any hosting specials are going on at the time they are looking to build their site.

Website Platform Cost

Are you looking to use a platform that allows you the client to make changes regularly? If so, then you would want to make sure that it uses a Content Management System (CMS) as its platform. WordPress, Drupal, Concrete, and others are all considered CMS platforms.  At V.i.Vs Design, we only build using the WordPress platform unless we are integrating Learning Management Sytems and then we use Moodle.

Integration Cost

If you are looking to build a site that has a shopping cart. Then we have to ensure that we can interface with your merchant gateway. Some gateways such as Authorize.net or Quickbooks require special plugins that cost extra. Additionally, some shipping carriers also require plugins that allow for automatic shipping calculations. However, even if you aren’t looking to build a complex shopping cart enabled website. Maybe you are looking to have a membership website, a site that allows clients to interact with you through file uploads, or schedule meetings. Whatever the case may be, some of these additional features and requests often require additional fees or third-party integrations.

Design Cost

Some designers and developers will charge additional charges for complex custom designs. Rightfully so since many client designs require additional coding knowledge to function properly. We have a variety of standard pricing, but much of our work is scoped on a case-by-case basis. Since no website or service is the same, we want to provide everyone with personalized solutions and pricing. You can always use our project cost estimator to get a generalized idea and estimate pricing.
